Fabian Rivera-Chávez (he/him/el)
Assistant Professor – Principle Investigator
Dr. Fabian Rivera-Chávez completed his B.S in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz and received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of California, Davis under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Bäumler. He went on to pursue postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School in the laboratory of Prof. John Mekalanos before starting his lab at UCSD in 2020.
Sedelia Dominguez (she/her)
Postdoctoral Research Scholar
Dr. Sedelia Dominguez is a postdoctoral scholar who joined the Rivera-Chávez lab in 2022. Sedelia is a UC San Diego NIGMS-IRACDA postdoctoral fellow. She completed her B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry at St. John’s University in New York. After her bachelors, she pursued her Ph.D. in Molecular Biosciences at Washington State University under the supervision of Dr. Tom Kawula where she worked with Francisella tularensis and investigated how host metabolism contributed to bacterial replication. Currently, she is working on investigating the type II secretion system of Vibrio cholerae and the role type II secreted bacterial proteases may play in intestinal colonization, immune evasion and disease progression. Outside the lab, Sedelia is a certified yoga sculpt teacher at a local hot yoga studio, and enjoys reading, traveling and finding new places to eat in San Diego.
Maria de la Paz Gutierrez (she/her)
Postdoctoral Research Scholar
Dr. Maria de la Paz Gutierrez is a postdoctoral scholar who joined the Rivera-Chávez lab in 2024. She completed her degree in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology at Universidad Nacional de la Plata (Argentina). She received her Ph.D. in Exact Sciences from Universidad Nacional de la Plata under the supervision of Dr. Federico Sisti and Dr. Julieta Fernandez, where she studied the regulation of Bordetella bronchiseptica pathogenesis. She moved to the US to pursue postdoctoral research at West Virginia University at Dr. Mariette Barbier’s lab, working on vaccine development against Borrelia burgdorferi infection. Outside the lab, Paz enjoys travelling, doing acroyoga and spending time with Kenya, her baby-cat.
Claire Chapman (she/her)
Biological Sciences PhD Candidate
Claire Chapman is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Biological Sciences and joined the Rivera-Chavez lab in 2022. Claire is an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and serves as the Board Chair of the Biology Undergraduate and Master’s Mentorship Program (BUMMP) at UC San Diego. She received her B.S. in Global Disease Biology with minors in Public Health and Medical Entomology from the University of California, Davis, where she graduated summa cum laude as a Regents Scholar. She previously conducted research in the lab of Prof. Chris Barker at UC Davis and studied the behavioral thermoregulation of Aedes aegypti.

Andrew Kapinos is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biological Sciences who joined the Rivera-Chavez lab in 2022. Andrew graduated magna cum laude and with highest departmental honors from UCLA in 2019, where he double majored in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics (MIMG) and Human Biology and Society (HBS), with a minor in Public Health. He has previously conducted research in the lab of Dr. Jordan Moberg Parker and Dr. Amanda Freise at UCLA, where he characterized novel actinobacteriophages and investigated phage genetic diversity
Andrew Quach (he/him)
Biological Sciences PhD Student
Andrew Quach is a PhD student who joined the Rivera-Chávez lab in 2024 and is co-advised by Dr. Deepshika Ramanan at Salk Institute. He graduated with Latin honors and obtained his B.S. in General Biology with a minor in Psychology from UC San Diego. Additionally, he received his M.S. in Biology from UC San Diego where he conducted his undergraduate and graduate research training co-mentored by Dr. Kim Barrett and Dr. Soumita Das. In their labs, he has published multiple manuscripts investigating intestinal epithelial interactions, including elucidating the mechanism behind how Salmonella elicits diarrhea.
